Profile for Peter Taylor. July
2008.
Peter Taylor is an inspired, successful speaker,
author, mentor and the owner/ operator of 'Dorothy's Sister,
Bar and House of Fabulosity'. His extensive skills have
developed from a curious mix of business (hospitality) and sport
(equestrian).
Sport; In the
highly competitive world of 3 Day Eventing, Peter became an
international rider, coach, trainer and manager during a 24 year
career.
Peter first competed for NZ in
Europe in the lead up events
for the Moscow Olympics (1980). His success gave him great kudos as
a rider and many tipped him to go all the way in his career. An
unfortunate accident caused the death of his horse, preventing him
from competing at these Olympics.
His 24 year career continued as a contract rider in 8
countries. Peter went
on to train and manage the gold medallist, a Canadian, at the Pan
American Games (1991), participated with the Canadian Olympic 3 day
team, as the stables / operations and assistant team manager at
Barcelona Olympics (1992).
He
again co-managed and coached the Canadians at the world
championships in Holland
(1994). His
organisational skills came to the fore when he held the position of executive
director at the Auckland International 3 Day event (1993 ), and went
on to stage the Manukau Show jumping festival (1994) NZ’s highest
prized televised jumping event at the
time.
1998
to 2001, Peter managed the worlds largest public equestrian center
in Sydney, at Centennial Park, responsible for 8 other businesses,
224 horses and the control of up to 400 people per
day.
Business; Peter excelled
in hospitality. After graduating with a diploma in Hotel and
catering management, he co-foundered and was the head chef of the
ground breaking Auckland restaurant Le Brie. He went on to
pion
eer
the iconic neighbourhood bar Surrender Dorothy on
Auckland’s premier eating strip, Ponsonby Road. While in Australia,
Peter founded the successful catering business Madigan’s Kitchen, in
Sydney. At present he owns and operates Dot's Bar 223 Symonds St
Auckland.
Peter’s story;
A
unique circumstance irrevocably changed Tailors life. While at the Barcelona
Olympics, he was unknowingly infected with a rare parasite from a
sand fly bite. The illness, Visceral Leishmaniasis Donnovanni,
usually kills by destroying the bone marrow within twenty months.
Peter remains the only person living in the world. Now in his
twelfth year of treatment fulfilling a hard regime of chemotherapy,
his ability to continue repeated rounds of treatment have made him a
medical pioneer, completing 703 doses to date. He
continues to have a dose a day for one week every eight
weeks.
Now
partially blind and profoundly deaf from the effects of the
treatment, Peter brings a refreshing personal perspective to dealing
with change and staying motivated.
With
his extensive background and successful track record Peter is in
great demand to speak on;
- Team Building in a
business environment
- Goal setting with a
sustained clarity and expectations of completion
- Change, understandably
poignant from life experience
- Personal development
and humoan resources
He
uses a PowerPoint slide of photos and some film footage of his
700th dose.
Author; His published auto biography, ‘Don’t Postpone
Joy’, is a wonderful boy’s own adventure story of having fun while
turning adversity into an advantage. From riding the circuits of
Europe , living in the deep south of America and the wild streets of
Sydney, Peter remains with integrity to his twin motto’s of ‘To Thine Own Self be True’
and ‘Don’t Postpone
Joy’
Now a
Braille and talking book, Peter continues to inspire as he did with
the Sixty Minutes documentary screened in February 2005. After the
success of his book, he studied creative writing at Auckland
University and wrote his first novel
The
novel, 'Girl, You're The Last Word' a journey of a show girl and her
family, has placed in the best foreign entries list at the Canadian
aid Country Literary Contest, for unpublished manuscripts in
December 2007.
2007, Peter decided to become self
employed. Virtually unemployable due to his disabilities and having
every eighth week off, he returned to his first love, hospitality
and opened Dorothy's Sister, a bar and house of fabulosity.
He is back in the
kitchen, where he enjoys creating; making the home made cakes both
modern and retro style and a Tapas menu of bar food. His partner
Rodney Coleman runs the bar and
front of house. Together, they have offered a unique entertainment
environment and are again popular on
Auckland's premier eating and
entertainment strip, Ponsonby
Road.
His model of business is a
continuation of applications of years of experience learnt from his
former successful businesses, an international equestrian career
which involves extensive human resources skills and now his own self
awareness of living with blindness and
deafness.
Peter continues to write. He is a
third through the sequel of 'Girl' with his novel, 'Shut Up, I'm
Talking' and has started another novel about the bar, with a working
title of Dot's, a Bar and House of Fabulosity. In this latest novel,
Peter addresses his model of business with humour, based around the
wonderful diversity of characters who now call Dot's
'Home'.
His achievements continue.
-
This week he will collect a trophy for
Winner as Entrepreneur of Best Emerging Business at the Ponsonby
News Entrepreneur Awards.
-
He is the reigning
'Queen of the Whole Universe 2007, a performance celebrated with a
standing ovation to an audience of 2.500 at
Auckland's biggest stage,
The Aotea Center.
-
On July
4th, 2008, Peter completed
his 700th dose of treatment for the control of the bone
