Vera and Doreen
The
Fabulosity Duo
Vera's Story
Vera
Vera, Grew up in Northland. The halcyon days of her
childhood were spent on the east coast beaches of Matapouri and
Ngaruru. As a teenager, leaping about the lounge room, she new she
was destined for the stage. As a show girl, she performed in the
chorus line at Burgundy's in Parnell, before jumping the ditch, furthering her
career in the big Lloyd Weber productions, in Sydney and Melbourne.
Las
Vegas was her place of work when a wealthy businessman fell in
love with her from the front row.
She
soon married her perfect match admirer and lived a princess style
life of overseas travel. Vera and her beloved husband, Levis Jrn, y
partied in the top cities around the world-
Monaco, London,
Paris,
Berlin
and New
York.
He
lavished upon his doll, as she was dressed by the finest designers,
wore fabulous jewels and only drank French champagne, preferably
Tattinger. Of course she ate sparingly to keep her model like
figure.
After 24 years of a fabulous Barbie and
Ken lifestyle, it came to a grinding halt. Vera was 47, had a little
work around her eyes and loved her husband dearly. It happened
quickly from the time she noticed cracks in their relationship. He left her for a young
thing, so botoxed, she couldn't even blow out her own birthday cake.
Vera wondered if she could do the little thing he liked best as her
lips could hardly move.
Never
a girl to stay down for long, she returned to her own land and
opened Dorothy's Sister Bar, returning to the boards , well heels
and began performing again. Her name was known among the women's
business circles with her speciality as a speaker. Opportunities
have taken her around the country. It was at a function in New
Plymouth, speaking at the Country Women's Association, where Vera
met Doreen, one of the organising committee. On hearing Doreen's
tale of life and the no good husbands, Vera decided, Doreen, would
be perfect for her bar in Auckland.
Vera
brought Doreen to Auckland
to work as her bar manager. A strong friendship grew and together
they have developed a loyal clientele of diverse and gorgeous
people. In fact Vera talked Doreen in joining her on the stage. And
now they are the
fabulosity Duo.
Doreen's Story

Doreen Schwartz.
A Country girl, Doreen grew up in
Stratford. On leaving school she worked at McKenzies,
in New Plymouth, as a shop girl. Her full curly hair and good figure
looked great in the black uniform and she favours this colour to
this very day.
Unsuccessful in marriage, Doreen's first
husband, Al, had a nasty accident with a tractor driven post thumper
and was found dead in a back paddock, due to being crushed through
the groin by the fencing post.
Her
second also a dairy farmer, cheated on her. Although Doreen could
milk cows as good as any, this vileness, Gordy, had played hanky
panky with the big Dutch woman, 4 farms away.
Doreen is a strong and sensible woman, in
fact she is very natural, with her hairy legs and flat shoes that is
when she isn't in gumboots. But she wouldn't tolerate the
humiliation. She had to leave.
Moving out of the Stratford
district, Doreen met her 3rd husband, Bert, while working
at the RSA in Wanganui. He was a commercial pig farmer, wealthy and
adored her. He was a kind, if not boring man, but she felt he was
safe and would take care of her.
It
went sour when Doreen went to feed the pigs one afternoon and to her
horror, found him having sex with Doris, their prize
winning sow. that and the indestructible odour of pig manure finally
convinced her to live a single life. She could trust men no
longer.
She
returned to the township of
New
Plymouth,
working in the RSA once again as a barmaid. While attending a CWA
meeting one Wednesday night on a cold winter evening, the wind
blowing off the sea, , she met Vera, the speaker. They immediately
became friends as Doreen unfolded her fateful story. Vera's offer to
manage the bar, Dorothy's Sister, in Auckland,
seemed a great opportunity to leave Taranaki and start a new life.
Auckland suited Doreen. It took some time to
get used to the traffic and pace of life. She noticed so many people
were stressed. Still, she adapted quickly and became the popular
barmaid.
During a conversation, over a cup of
coffee, one afternoon at Dot's, Doreen shared with Vera, how she
performed in the local Amateur and Dramatic Society productions and
was often a stand in for the star. She had her break when Phyllis
White, the star of 'sound of Music', got a nasty carbuncle on her
bottom and had to pull
our at the last minute. A deer farmer's wife, the stand-in, Marnie
Ferguson, was called to take the star role. But she too was
afflicted and came down with Brucellosis, sending her to her
sick bed. So Doreen was offered the role.
She
was the audience favourite and soon became the star of the New
Plymouth theatre group.
'Well, Love, we will put you on stage. You will perform,'
said Vera, putting down her cup of coffee. 'You can start this
Saturday.'
It was decided that Doreen's country background meant
she should sing country. So they decided the Tammy Wynette classic,
'Stand by Your Man' would be her first
performance. Doreen giggled, 'A bit ironic,
love,' she looked at Vera, 'Seeing as how my last two husbands,
treated me.' She raised her luscious eyelashes and rolled her eyes,
as they both burst out laughing. In her heart, Al, remained the love
of her life.
Doreen has gone from strength to strength.
In 6 months she is so popular, that a Doreen-look-alike party was
arranged to honour her during Dot's first birthday celebrations.
Jazz is her speciality now, with her Ella Fitzgerald unquestionably,
brilliant.
Doreen is often a celebrity judge at
country affairs, southern farmer of the Year, Best pikelet's on a
plate at the Gisborne A and P show and recently judged the margarine
carvings at the 2008 Hospitality Show.
So
famous now, Doreen has been offered pre approval for her green
card in America.
Together, the show girl and the country girl have
formed a fabulous cabaret duo of international flavour. Come see them every Friday
and Saturday at 10 pm or book them for
your party or work function. Watch this
